Indian Relay Race
The Indian Relay Race is the culminating event of the Big Bend Roundup Rodeo during the NCW Fair. Part of the Professional Indian Horse Racing Association’s annual schedule, teams consist of 3 horses and 4 people. 1 person is the jockey while the other 3 serve as catchers and holders. Horses have a bridle only and riders swing up and ride bareback. The race begins with each team assembled in front of the grandstands in their “circle”. The Indian Relay Race is a 50+ year old tradition during the NCW Fair, which accepts up to 12 entries. The minimum purse is $6,000 with a $1,000 consolation prize. The entry fee for teams is $200 and teams come from tribes all over the Northwest to compete, with the largest contingency coming from Omak and Okanogan. Watch the Indian Relay Race as the final event Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th of the Big Bend Roundup Rodeo.
